The only thing to fear, is fear itself

As I write this, here in the Uk we are now beginning to be gently eased out of lockdown, and fear is rampant in many that we are 'unlocking' too soon, and that a second wave is imminent. Now that may or may not turn out to be the case, but the real truth of the matter is that the fear of what is going on around us is actually causing far more damage than anything that is actually happening. As is always the case, it is all about perspective, this could be with us for months, years even, and there are two extreme ways of looking at it, and then everything in between. On one end of the stick we have the doomed perspective, the world is coming to an end, we are all going to die, and we need to hide away so that 'it' doesn't get us. And then on the other end is that the world has been given a wonderful opportunity to regroup and refocus, and come out of this better and stronger than ever before. We are being reminded of the things that are really important in life, many have found themselves being in lockdown alone, and this is a gift as it is in our solitude that we start to peel back the layers of who we are, and rediscover the truth of who we really are.

Basically how we get through this, depends on which end of the stick we focus on, and we have a choice, we always have a choice. Look at it this way, if 'it' were to get you, you might feel unwell for a couple of weeks, but my perspective on that is that that would acually be preferable to living in abject fear for months, maybe longer. You could spend the whole time paralysed by fear when actually you could have been embracing this wonderful opportunity to reflect on your life. You cannot control what is going on around you, and your attempts to do so are feeding your fear constantly. Imagine your fear as this being, jumping around gleefully every time you feed it with media, social media and your observation of other peoples behaviour. All the time it is getting bigger and bigger, gaining more and more power, until it overpowers you completely and you are too terrified to do anything!! Sounds a bit extreme doesn't it, but we do this to ourselves all the time, and it is all in our head.

The good news is that it doesn't have to be like this, you can knock that fear on the head and take back your power at any time!
